What is Mustang Media Fest?
Following the history of the biennial Jim Hayes Symposium, the Mustang Media Fest is a reimagining of this important event, including content specifically designed for current journalism students. These will include thought-provoking panel discussions, inspiring keynote presentations, hands-on media showcases and vibrant networking experiences.
What about Jim Hayes?
The spirit of the Jim Hayes Symposium lives on through the Jim Hayes Keynote event. Mustang Media Fest expands the celebration of student and alumni achievement while continuing to honor Professor Hayes with intention.
When is it happening?
Mustang Media Fest will take place on the Cal Poly campus between October 22-25, 2025. This four-day event is oriented for both students and alumni: the first two days focus on current students with panel sessions led by alumni and other industry leaders. Day three will feature the Jim Hayes Keynote, followed by a Hall of Fame Gala on day four. A more detailed schedule will be updated in the lead-up to the event.
Why change the name?
The Mustang Media Fest reflects the program’s growth—but tradition remains sacred. That’s why the Jim Hayes Keynote and Hall of Fame Gala are still the anchor points. The Mustang Media Fest was selected to reflect that growth to include the student-centered portion as well.
I'm an alumni, what events should I attend?
We’ve preserved the best part from previous symposia: a high-impact, alumni-centered keynote event, with two prominent speakers and presenting industry insights. Also, please celebrate with us at the Mustang Media Hall of Fame Gala, where we’ll honor five new inductees who shaped Mustang journalism.
I'm a student, will I have to miss classes to attend?
All journalism classes will be canceled during Mustang Media Fest so that students can fully participate in as many events as possible. Classwork will either be reassigned or rescheduled as determined by your individual instructor.
Will students be granted excuse forms so that they can attend sessions?
No. While all journalism classes will be cancelled during the festival to allow students to attend as many sessions as possible, you are still expected to attend your regular courses outside of the department.
Is there a dress code?
Attendees are encouraged to dress in business casual attire Wednesday through Friday. At Saturday’s Hall of Fame Gala, attendees are encouraged to wear semi-formal clothing.
Can any student/teacher attend?
Absolutely! All majors are welcome. Whether you’re into storytelling, tech design, or media ethics, there’s something for everyone.
Are there any incentives for students to attend more sessions?
Yes! Participate in activities like the scavenger hunt can win prizes such as Mustang Media Fest merch, gift cards, and Cal Poly swag.
