History:
Jim Hayes, a beloved Cal Poly Journalism professor, left an indelible mark on generations of students during his 23-year tenure. Known for his high standards, commitment to excellence, and thoughtful mentoring, Hayes shaped the futures of aspiring journalists and the spirit of the Cal Poly Journalism Department. He passed away from cancer at the age of 88, but his legacy continues to guide and inspire.
The Cal Poly Journalism Department created Mustang Media Fest and the Jim Hayes Keynote in his honor. Born from a simple but powerful idea—that the strongest paths forward are built by learning from those who came before—the festival brings students and alumni together to exchange insights, foster meaningful connections, and celebrate shared passion for journalism.
Jim Hayes is remembered fondly by faculty and alumni alike. His disciplined approach and unwavering commitment to excellence continue to influence the department and Mustang Media Fest. Through this celebration of community and mentorship, we carry forward his values and vision for what journalism—and journalists—can be.
